Fed: Outlook bright for lamb industry

Australia's Sheepmeat Council says the future of the nation's lamb industry is looking
brighter -- despite the United States' decision to impose damaging tariffs.

The council sees the opportunity for growth in the Australian market, as a result of
the Federal Government's $6 million Lamb Industry Development Program.

It says the main aim of the program is to help ensure that by 2002 -- when the US tariffs
are lifted -- the Australian lamb industry is in a stronger position in terms of producer-returns
and lamb export-value than before the US restrictions.
