Vic: Labor students stage sit-in at Crean's office

Up to 40 disgruntled young Labor supporters have staged a sit-in at federal oppositionleader SIMON CREAN's Melbourne electoral office over the ALP's refugee policy.

Labor Students spokeswoman CATH DAVIS says the party's younger members want to speakto Mr CREAN to express their disappointment that mandatory detention isn't abolished underthe party's immigration policy.

The Labor parliamentary caucus has endorsed the policy -- which includes the continuedexcision of Christmas Island from the migration zone, meaning asylum seekers will be deniedappeal rights they receive on the mainland.

Ms DAVIS says some protesters are threatening to resign if the policy's not altered.

Up to 40 protesters, who are members of various left groups within the ALP and on universitycampuses, walked into Mr CREAN's Clayton office just after 11am (AEDT).

A spokeswoman for Mr CREAN says it's highly unlikely he'll be speaking to the students.
