Fed: Republican chief appointed to Liberal think tank

CANBERRA, Dec 21 AAP - The man who led the failed campaign to make Australia a republic
was today appointed to the board of the Liberal Party's think tank.

Malcolm Turnbull, who only recently stepped down as chairman of the Australian Republican
Movement, is to be director of the Menzies Research Centre.

"It is encouraging that Malcolm is again active as a Liberal and his commitment to
a task and ability to motivate people will be a great asset," Liberal Party President
Shane Stone said today.

Despite his prominent role in the republic debate, Mr Turnbull has long been associated
with the Liberal Party and is the son in-law of former Liberal Attorney-General Tom Hughes.

"His appointment is a demonstration of the relevance and dynamic nature of the Liberal
Party and of the party's ability to incorporate a diverse range of ideas and beliefs,"

Mr Stone said.

Other directors of the Menzies Centre are Mr Stone and former Liberal Party federal
director Andrew Robb.

Mr Turnbull is co-chairman and managing director of law firm Goldman Sachs Australia.
